PEDERNALES FALLS STATE PARK. Pedernales Falls State Park is off Ranch Road 2766 fourteen miles east of Johnson City in Blanco County. The 4,860-acre park, situated on the banks of the scenic Pedernales River, was purchased in 1970 from private owners by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The parkland is typical of the Edwards Plateau region, with rolling dry grasslands, rugged cedar brakes, oak-mesquite woodlands, and lush riverbanks lined with bald cypress. Wildlife is abundant in the park. Deer, turkey, raccoons, skunks, armadillos, opossums, and more than 150 species of birds, including the endangered bald eagle and golden-cheeked warbler, inhabit or migrate through the area. Facilities include restrooms, hiking trails, and camping and picnicking areas.
