PADILLA CREEK. Padilla (Padillo) Creek rises in west central Atascosa County a mile southwest of Kyote (at 29°00' N, 98°50' W) and runs east for 13½ miles to its mouth (at 29°01' N, 98°41' W) on the Atascosa River, just north of Flores. Two small artificial lakes have been produced by dams in its upper reaches. The stream traverses low-rolling to flat terrain, surfaced by sandy and clay loams that support scrub brush, cacti, and grasses. Some of the area is used for dryland farming. The creek name was first used in 1855 by a district surveyor for the James Lowe survey. It may be from the local Padilla family, several of whose members had land grants in the area.
