PAINT CREEK
(Callahan County). Paint Creek rises four miles northeast of Cross
Plains in southeastern Callahan County (at 32°10' N, 99°07'
W) and runs south for thirteen miles, passing through the southwest
corner of Eastland County before reaching its mouth on the Red
River, eight miles north of Lake Brownwood in Brown County (at
32°01' N, 99°05' W). In its upper reaches the stream
passes through rolling hills, surfaced by clay and sandy loams
that support scrub brush, mesquite, cacti, grasses, and live oak
and juniper trees; in its lower reaches the stream traverses terrain
of resistant ledges and low cuestas,qv surfaced by shallow, stony soils that support live oak, juniper,
and grasses.
