QUITAQUE CREEK.
Quitaque Creek, a continuous stream in its lower reaches, rises
just east of the intersection of Farm roads 788 and 378, twelve
miles north of Lockney in northwest Floyd County (at 34°16'
N, 101°25' W), and runs thirty-three miles east to its mouth
on the North Pease River, sixteen miles north of Matador in Motley
County (at 34°15' N, 100°50' W). Upstream, it crosses
flat terrain surfaced by quartz sand and silt that support scrub
brush and grasses. Downstream, the flood-prone flat land with
local shallow depressions is surfaced by sandy and clay loams
in which grow water-tolerant hardwoods, conifers, and grasses.
