RANDOLPH, CYRUS HALBERT (1817-1889). Cyrus Halbert Randolph, legislator, government official, and member of the Snively expedition,^qv son of Jesse and Susanna (Halbert) Randolph, was born on December 9, 1817, in St. Clair County, Illinois. He lived in Missouri, Tennessee, and Alabama until March 1838, when he came to Texas and settled in Houston County. He was an attorney but seldom practiced his profession. His earliest service was as a member of the Snively expedition. Randolph was chief justice of Houston County in 1844 and 1845. He was elected sheriff in 1847 and served one year. He represented Houston County in the Fifth and Sixth legislatures and was state treasurer from 1858 to 1865. He continued to live in Austin and was connected with the General Land Office^qv and the Treasury Department. He was married twice, but the name of his first wife is not known. His second wife was Susan Nowlin; five children were born to them. Randolph died on August 30, 1889. The community of Randolph, in Houston County, was named for him.
