ROWLAND, TEXAS. Rowland is off Farm Road 103 three miles south of the Red River and twenty miles northeast of Montague in extreme north central Montague County. It was named for Capt. John T. Rowland, an area landowner and a member of the Texas legislature. The community likely reached its peak during the middle to late 1800s, when the Chisholm Trail passed within a few miles of it. The earliest available population statistics for Rowland date from the mid-1930s, when the town reported thirty residents and two businesses. Throughout the 1940s and 1950s it reported a population of seventy-five, with two businesses. Thereafter no further statistics were available.
