SAWYER, FREDERICK A. (?-?). Frederick A. Sawyer, lawyer and government official, a native of North Carolina, practiced law in New Orleans before he sailed to Texas on the Oceanqv as aide to Thomas Jefferson Greenqv in the spring of 1836. From August 8 to September 13 Sawyer was David G. Burnet'sqv secretary of war in the ad interim government.qv He lived at Velasco. In 1838-39 he represented Brazoria County in the House of the Third Texas Congress. He probably went to California during the gold rush of 1849; on September 20, 1853, he was made Texas commissioner of deeds in California and was living in San Francisco on May 17, 1857, when his commission was renewed.
