SCHREINER, LOUIS ALBERT (1870-1970). Louis Albert Schreiner, philanthropist, son of Mary Magdalena (Enderle) and Charles Armand Schreiner,^qv was born on December 31, 1870, on his parents' Turtle Creek Ranch in Kerr County, a short time before the family moved into Kerrville, where his father had opened a general merchandise store. Schreiner attended school in Comfort, the German-English School in San Antonio, and Eastern Business College in Poughkeepsie, New York. He returned to work as a bookkeeper in his father's bank in Kerrville. In 1918, when Charles Schreiner divided his $6 million estate among his eight children, Louis received the bank as part of his share. Schreiner donated land for Kerrville's first airport, Louis Schreiner Field, and, with his father and brothers, donated land for the Veterans Administration Hospital (now the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Kerrvilleqv), the Texas Lions Camp for Crippled Children, and a state agricultural building. He gave numerous gifts, including two dormitories, to Schreiner Institute, a college and prep school his father founded. He was involved in organizing the local telephone company, and during the 1930s he became the only Texan among officers and directors of the National Wool Trade Association. He was a member of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association, and he is credited with founding the cooperative wool-marketing system in Texas. During the Great Depression^qv years of the 1930s Schreiner encouraged local ranchers to stay on their land to await the return of better times. In 1940 his portrait, along with others, was hung in the Saddle and Sirloin Club in the Stockyards Inn in Chicago, in honor of men who had made outstanding contributions to agriculture and livestock raising in the United States. Schreiner married Mae Shiner on September 15, 1898, in San Antonio. They had one daughter. Mae died by 1932, and Schreiner married Mrs. Ecaland F. Scobey in New York City on January 15, 1936. He helped organize the Kerrville Rotary Club and was the treasurer of Masonic Lodge No. 697 for fifty years. He died on September 18, 1970, nearly 100 years old, and was buried in Glenrest Cemetery, Kerrville.
