SNEED, SEBRON GRAHAM, JR. (1836-1893). Sebron Graham Sneed, Jr., lawyer and educator, son of Marinda (Atkins) and Sebron Graham Sneed,^qv was born in Green County, Kentucky, on September 11, 1836. He moved to Austin, Texas, with his parents in 1848. He attended Christian Brothers College at Galveston and won a scholarship to the School of Propaganda in Rome in 1858, the same year he was licensed to practice law. He studied toward the priesthood in Rome until 1860, when he returned to Austin. He enlisted in the Confederate Army in 1861 as a private in Company G, Sixth Regiment, Texas Infantry. He advanced to captain and was assistant adjutant general when captured by Union troops. He was imprisoned at Camp Chase, Ohio, in 1863 and at Louisville, Kentucky, in 1865. After the war Sneed practiced law in Austin. He established Austin Normal Military School, a boys' institution that operated from 1869 to 1874, was the first treasurer of the Austin school board, and was a benefactor of St. Mary's Academy. In 1871 he was a member of the Democratic state executive committee. In 1881 he served on the committee from the Texas State Teachers Association^qv that presented a memorial to the legislature requesting the establishment of the University of Texas. Sneed also served as chief clerk in the state comptroller's department and was acting comptroller in 1882. He married Fannie Finnin of Austin in 1860, and they had four children. In 1874, after Fannie's death, Sneed married Alice Pauline Bacon of Austin; they had one daughter. Sneed was superintendent of Travis County schools and a candidate for state superintendent of public instruction when he died in Austin on September 1, 1893.
