STEDMAN, NATHAN ALEXANDER (1854-1927). Nathan Alexander Stedman, railroad lawyer and judge, was born on October 22, 1854, at Henderson, Texas, the son of Clara Harvey (White) and William Stedman.qv He attended Washington and Lee University, 1870-73, studied law in his father's office at Marshall, and was admitted to the bar. He was county attorney and then district attorney of Harrison County. In June 1882 he married Elizabeth Rowlett at Carthage; they had two children. In the early 1880s Stedman moved to Fort Worth, where he was district judge from 1892 to 1895. He served on the Railroad Commissionqv from May 1, 1895, to January 4, 1897, when he returned to private practice in Fort Worth. From about 1898 to 1908 he was general attorney at Palestine for the International-Great Northern Railroad. From 1908 to 1912 he was a railroad attorney in Austin, where he later entered a law partnership with F. A. Williams. Stedman was a regent of the University of Texas from 1912 to 1915. In 1904, after his first wife's death, he married Mrs. Emma Shapard Hicks. He was a Methodist and a Democrat and held memberships in the American, Texas State, and Travis County bar associations. Stedman died in Austin on September 14, 1927, and was buried in Oakwood Cemetery.
