SALEM, TEXAS (Waller County). Salem is on Farm Road 1736 four miles northwest of Hempstead in north Waller County. The settlement may have been established before the Civil War; a few death dates on grave markers in the Salem Cemetery actually predate the war. A school existed at Salem in 1892 but apparently merged with a neighboring district the following year. In 1990 a few scattered dwellings and vacant houses and the cemetery remain at the site.
