SAN LUIS ISLAND. San Luis Island lay off the south end of Galveston Island (at 29°04' N, 95°08' W). It is now joined to Follets Island by a causeway across San Luis Pass. The town of San Luis was established on the island in the mid-1800s. Storms and shifting sands joined San Luis Island to Follets Island (Velasco Peninsula) so that the island no longer exists. The recreational area known as Surfside Beach extends along the Gulf shore of Follets Island from the mouth of the Brazos River to the island's northern end.
