TEXAS MONTHLY REVIEW AND STATE TOPICS.
Texas Monthly Review and State Topics
originated in Austin in 1903 under the name of State Topics,
A Journal of the People, edited by Atkins Jefferson McLemoreqv and Horace M. Shelton. The weekly, a slick paper magazine of fifteen
to twenty pages, was concerned with Texas political affairs and
sponsored industrial development, state rights, and protective
tariff. The periodical ceased publication temporarily in 1906
but was resumed by McLemore, who moved it to Houston in 1911.
In October 1913 State Topics took over the subscription
list of the Branding Iron, an Austin magazine that had
failed. The name was changed to Texas Weekly Review in
October 1916 and from May 1917 until 1920 was published as a monthly
under the combination title of Texas Monthly Review and State
Topics. The magazine was moved to San Antonio in 1921 and
named the Texas Commonwealth until October 1921. When McLemore
moved his magazine to Laredo, he changed the name to the International
Commonwealth and included improvement of relations with Mexico
in his editorial policy. The magazine ceased publication after
the April 1922 issue.
