WESTERN SPORTSMAN. The Western Sportsman magazine was initially founded in 1937 in Denver by Charles Waterman and dealt with hunting and fishing activities in western states. Publication was suspended during World War II,^qv and Joe Austell Small, of Austin, Texas, bought the magazine at that time, assuming the role of editor and publisher. The magazine was revived as a bimonthly in 1947 and was published by Small's firm, Sportsman Publishing Company. Copies sold for fifteen cents and had a two-color cover with black-and-white text pages. Photos were usually supplied by contributors, and, besides subscription and newsstand sales, the publication was supported by classified advertising and by run-of-book display ads. Contributors included J. Frank Dobie, Frederick B. Gipson,^qv Burl Tuttle, and S. Omar Barker; illustrations were provided by George Phippen. Western Sportsman was considered to be the first regional outdoor publication to become a financial success. Small sold it in 1957; however, publication was thereafter suspended, and the magazine's ownership reverted to Small. Small's publishing firm became Western Publications, Incorporated,^qv and produced several magazines dealing with various aspects of the American West, but he never revived Western Sportsman. Western Publications was sold in 1979, but that firm never revived the magazine. A Western Sportsman is currently published by a Canadian publisher.
