WARD, LAFAYETTE (1854-1923). Lafayette Ward, cattleman, son of Lafayette and Agnes (Patterson) Ward, was born in Jackson County, Texas, on November 18, 1854. On May 31, 1880, he married Lottie Betty Compton of Galveston; they became the parents of five children. Ward was taught the ranching business by his father and became a leader in introducing Hereford, Brahman, and Jersey cattle to Texas. He owned two large ranches on Carancahua Bay and another in Foard County. He was a director of the Great Southern Life Insurance Company. Ward moved to San Antonio in 1912 and died there on November 19, 1923. La Ward, in Jackson County, was named in his honor.
