WIPPRECHT, RUDOLPH (1824-1892). Rudolph Wipprecht, linguist and educator, was born in Nebra, Prussia, on May 24, 1824. After graduating from the University of Jena, he entered the Prussian customs service. He left Germany during the political upheavals of the late 1840s, arrived at Galveston in December 1849, and settled at Seguin in the fall of 1850. On November 25, 1854, he married Julie Kapp, and they became the parents of four children. Wipprecht served as an enrolling officer during the Civil War^qv and after the war moved to New Braunfels, where he was principal of a school. He became noted for his ability in translation of Spanish documents and was made professor of languages at Texas A&M in the 1880s. He held the position until shortly before his death on May 5, 1892.
