WYATT, GEORGE W. (ca. 1848-?). George W. Wyatt, who represented Waller and Fort Bend counties during the Eighteenth Legislature, was born in Waller County, Texas, around 1848. Wyatt was a schoolteacher in Hempstead when he won election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1882. He was one of two black members of that body. Wyatt was a Republican; he served on the Counties and County Boundaries Committee. Following an abusive article written in the San Antonio Express and directed at Wyatt and the other black representative, R. J. Moore,^qv the House approved a resolution that criticized the Express. Little additional information exists concerning Wyatt's life.
