WYATT, GEORGE W. (ca. 1848-?). George W. Wyatt, who represented Waller and Fort Bend counties during the Eighteenth Legislature, was born in Waller County, Texas, around 1848. Wyatt was a schoolteacher in Hempstead when he won election to the Texas House of Representatives in 1882. He was one of two black members of that body. Wyatt was a Republican; he served on the Counties and County Boundaries Committee. Following an abusive article written in the San Antonio Express and directed at Wyatt and the other black representative, R. J. Moore,qv the House approved a resolution that criticized the Express. Little additional information exists concerning Wyatt's life.
