WILDERNESS PARK MUSEUM. The Wilderness Park Museum is on seventeen acres at the foot of the Franklin Mountains northeast of El Paso. It was established in 1977, thanks in large part to the efforts of the El Paso Heritage Foundation; its continuing funding is provided by the city of El Paso. The museum features exhibits on the history and prehistory of the indigenous cultures of the El Paso area and frequently welcomes traveling exhibits from the greater Southwest area. The grounds of the museum include more than two miles of nature trails with reproductions of several native dwellings and ceremonial buildings, in addition to providing a covered picnic area with views of the flora and fauna of the Chihuahuan Desert.
