YORK, MILTON GARRETT, SR. (1843-1911). Milton Garrett York, early rancher and legislator, son of Ruth (Lucas) and Aaron York, was born on September 5, 1843, in Chireno, Texas. When Milton was sixteen years of age, he moved to Evergreen, where he became a school teacher. He served in the Confederate Army as a private in Capt. George W. Campbell's Company of the Fifth Texas Cavalry. York married Matilda Ann Heck on October 19, 1865, and they had six children. When the Texas legislature established Lee County in 1874, York was one of those appointed to form the county. He served in the House of Representatives during the Twenty-Second Legislature, 1890-92. He died on September 20, 1911, and was buried in the Giddings City Cemetery.
