TEXAS, LOUISIANA AND EASTERN RAILROAD
TEXAS, LOUISIANA AND EASTERN RAILROAD. The Texas, Louisiana and Eastern Railroad Company was chartered on March 26, 1891. The railroad was planned to connect Conroe in Montgomery County with a point to the east on the Trinity River in the John Cherry Survey in Liberty County, for a total of forty miles. According to the original articles of incorporation the railroad had a capital stock of $400,000. The principal place of business for the railroad was Conroe. The members of the first board of directors were C. M. Putnam and F. D. Meriam, both of Kansas City, Missouri; J. P. Irwin, A. S. Hall, and J. J. Chew, all of Houston; I. Conroe and J. A. Smyth, both of Conroe. Most of the Texas, Louisiana and Eastern's earnings came from freight operations, but passenger service was also provided. In 1895 the line reported passenger earnings of $1,300 and freight earnings of $27,000 and owned two locomotives and twenty-one cars. In 1892 the railroad built twenty-two miles of track between Conroe and Cleveland. The next year it extended the line another six miles to Meriam, and in 1894 it added two miles of track beyond Meriam. A receiver was appointed for the company in June 1894. On October 4, 1895, the railroad was sold to W. A. Kincaid, trustee, of Galveston, and the property was deeded to the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway on July 26, 1897.
