HOLMES, EDWARD L.

HOLMES, EDWARD L. (?–1840). Edward L. Holmes, early settler and legislator, a native of Darien, Georgia, moved to Texas during or soon after the Texas Revolution. He was practicing law in Matagorda in 1838 and on June 28 married Sophia W. Sweeny of Brazoria. From November 1838 to July 5, 1840, he represented Matagorda County in the House of the Third and the Fourth congresses; he served in the Third as chairman of the Judiciary Committee. He died in Matagorda on July 31, 1840.
