RHEA, JOHN CONLEY

RHEA, JOHN CONLEY (1811–1891). John Conley Rhea, landowner and state representative, was born in Knoxville, Blount County, Tennessee, on December 17, 1811. He was the son of Robert Mark and Olivia (Conley) Rhea. Rhea married Elizabeth Louise Edwards, possibly on September 8, 1836, in St. Clair County, Alabama. Rhea immigrated with his family to Texas and arrived in Cass County on December 1, 1841. On January 5, 1842, he secured 640 acres of land in that county. He purchased additional land in the county in 1847. The 1860 census listed Rhea as a farmer in Cass County. The family consisted of seven children (four girls and three boys) ranging from twenty to two years of age. In addition to being a large local landowner, Rhea was active in local and state politics. In 1861 he was elected representative for Davis County (Cass County had been renamed in honor of Confederate States of America President Jefferson Davis earlier in the year) and Bowie and Titus counties to the House of the Ninth Texas Legislature. He served until November 2, 1863, and was on the Claims and Accounts Committee and Contingent Expenses Committee. Rhea was living in Hunt County by the 1880 census. He died on January 3, 1891, and was buried in Hopewell Cemetery in Hunt County.
