ARROYO BALUARTE. Arroyo Baluarte, also known as Baluarte Creek and San Antonio Creek, rises eight miles southwest of Thompsonville in north central Jim Hogg County (at 27°12' N, 98°49' W) and runs southeast for forty-one miles to its mouth on Laguna Salada, four miles south of Falfurrias in northeastern Brooks County (at 27°10' N, 98°07' W). In its lower reaches it is dammed to form Laguna Madre, not to be confused with the coastal lagoon of that name. The Arroyo Baluarte traverses flat to gently sloping terrain surfaced by shallow clay and sandy loams and loose sand that support scattered scrub brush and grasses. It is named after a land grant, San Antonio de Baluarte, originally granted to José Luis Salinas.
