CARTER CREEK. Carter Creek (Prewetts Creek) rises four miles south of North Zulch in southwestern Madison County (at 30°51' N, 96°06' W) and flows west six miles to its mouth on the Navasota River, near the Brazos county line in far northwestern Grimes County (at 30°49' N, 96°10' W). The stream traverses gently sloping to nearly level terrain surfaced by loamy and clayey soils that support post oak, blackjack oak, elm, hackberry, water oak, and pecan woods along its banks. Settlement in the vicinity began during the mid-1830s. In 1881 the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church was constructed near the headwaters of the creek. The Oak Grove community was established on the north bank of the middle creek in the late nineteenth century.
