FRESNO CREEK (BREWSTER COUNTY)
FRESNO CREEK (Brewster County). Fresno Creek rises two miles southwest of Emory Peak in Big Bend National Park in south central Brewster County (at 29°13' N, 103°19' W) and runs southeast for twenty-one miles to its mouth on the Rio Grande, twelve miles southwest of Boquillas (at 29°04' N, 103°06' W). The stream is intermittent for its first eight and last eleven miles. It rises in an area of rugged terrain with numerous box canyons and shallow, stony soils that support Mexican buckeye, walnut, persimmon, desert willow, scrub brush, and sparse grasses. In the creek's lower reaches the terrain changes to steep to gentle slopes with variable soils that support scrub brush and sparse grasses. Fresno is Spanish for "ash tree."
