AGUJA PEAK. Aguja Peak is 6½ miles south-southwest of Terlingua in southwestern Brewster County (at 29°13' N, 103°38' W). Aguja, meaning "needle" or "spire" in Spanish, is descriptive of the peak, which rises in the northwest part of a short, rugged uplift called the Sierra Aguja. The Sierra Aguja is some 2½ miles long by one mile wide and runs northwest-southeast astride the boundary of Big Bend National Park. Vegetation in the area consists predominantly of juniper, oak, grasses, chaparral, and cacti. With an elevation at its summit of approximately 3,280 feet above sea level, Aguja Peak is the highest point in the Sierra Aguja. Among residents of the region the mountain is more commonly known as Needle Peak.
