BLUE MOUNTAINS. The Blue Mountains stand between the James and Llano rivers and extend from eastern Kimble County to southwestern Mason County. Their summit elevations range from 1,800 to 2,176 feet above sea level. Monument Mountain, with a height of 2,160 feet above sea level, is within this range in Mason County (at 30°34' N, 99°27' W). The range runs from the southwest to the northeast in the limestone hills of the northeastern edge of the Edwards Plateau. The local countryside is generally flat and surfaced with stony, clayey, and loamy soils that support grasses and open stands of live oak, mesquite, and Ashe juniper.
