TASCOTAL MESA. Tascotal Mesa is in east central Presidio County five miles west of the Brewster county line (at 29°39' N, 103°53' W). At an elevation of 5,152 feet above sea level, its summit rises 552 feet over San Jacinto Creek that runs along its north and east edges. Tascotal Mesa stands in the area of the Bofecillos Mountains and consists of conglomerates, sandstones, and tuffs capped by lava. The topography of the area is desert mountain terrain and rugged canyon land with loose surface rubble. Vegetation consists primarily of sparse grasses, cacti, and desert shrubs of conifers and oaks. Tascotal is an Aztec Indian word meaning "cedar brake."
