LAKESIDE, TEXAS (Colorado County). Lakeside was off U.S. Highway 90A by Eagle Lake on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway thirteen miles southeast of Columbus in southeastern Colorado County. The community, named for its proximity to Eagle Lake, was founded as a station on the Cane Belt Railroad when that line built between Matagorda and Eagle Lake around 1900. As a station on the Cane Belt, Lakeside enjoyed a brief period of prosperity, and in the early 1900s it had rice mills and the Lakeside Sugar Refinery. A post office operated there from 1900 to 1904. The refinery failed by 1912. In 1940 the community comprised a golf course, a cemetery, and scattered dwellings. By the mid-1980s the Lakeside community was no longer named on the county highway map, but the Lakeside Irrigation Company had a pumping installation to the west of the old community site.
