PHILIPPI, TEXAS. Philippi, among the earliest settlements in Gregg County, was probably founded in the late 1840s and was located near the present western edge of Longview. A pay school was established in the late 1840s or early 1850s by Professor Hamilton McNutt, who had a headright grant in the area. After the Civil Warqv the settlement disappeared. No population estimates were available.
