SMITH OAKS, TEXAS. Smith Oaks is just off of U.S. Highway 82 four miles east of Sherman in central Grayson County. It is named for R. E. L. Smith, who for a time, presumably during the late nineteenth century, operated a cotton gin in the area. The population in 1936 was ten, and Smith Oaks had two businesses. From 1936 through the mid-1960s the population increased to fifty, although by 1967 the community reported no rated businesses or other institutions. In 1990 Smith Oaks, now only a community of widely scattered houses, again reported a population of fifty.
