WILKE, TEXAS. Wilke, located in central Burnet County at the fork of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad on the southeast side of Burnet, was once a stockaded settlement which served as a camp and cutting ground for the convict laborers cutting granite for the Capitolqv in Austin. It was named for Gustav (Gus) Wilke,qv who served as foreman for the project. The name remained as a railroad stop in the 1940s, but it did not appear on county highway maps in the 1980s.
