WILKE, TEXAS. Wilke, located in central Burnet County at the fork of the Austin and Northwestern Railroad on the southeast side of Burnet, was once a stockaded settlement which served as a camp and cutting ground for the convict laborers cutting granite for the Capitol^qv in Austin. It was named for Gustav (Gus) Wilke,^qv who served as foreman for the project. The name remained as a railroad stop in the 1940s, but it did not appear on county highway maps in the 1980s.
