Stephen F. Austin, by William Howard, 1833. Watercolor on ivory. 5 1/4" x 4 5/8". James Perry Bryan Papers, The Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin; CN 01436. This portrait is the larger of two miniatures of Austin painted by British artist William Howard in Mexico City in 1833. Austin himself recorded that one of the miniatures was made in October, "when things were very unfavorable for Texas and I was not in a pleasant humour." The background supposedly shows a spot on the Brazos River just above its mouth. Soon after these portraits were completed, Austin was arrested on his way back to Texas. He then arranged to have both, which had been in his luggage, sent to his sister, Emily Austin Perry, and brother-in-law.

Mapa Geográfico de la Provincia de Texas, by Stephen F. Austin, 1822. Manuscript. Stephen F. Austin Map Collection, The Center for American History, The University of Texas at Austin; SA11 1822. Stephen F. Austin, founder of Anglo-American Texas, carried this map when he went to Mexico City to confirm his empresario contract. It was the most complete and accurate map of Texas to that date.
