Herdsdale and Maudlowe
Herdsdale, Texas, was once a small community southeast of Tivoli in
Refugio County. I believe that it had a store and a school, and I know
that it had a cotton gin. The old gin is still there as well as several
houses. Herdsdale used to be listed on Texas roadmaps when I was a kid,
but these maps are scarce. My Dad used to know people who lived there
and we used to go visit them. I think they were kin to us, as we had a
Dietrich family reunion there once. I remember that the family had a
bull that was "gentle" and all of us kids were taking turns riding him.
Well, after a while, the bull had enough and threw one of the girls
off... so much for his "gentle" streak, I guess.
Maudlowe, also in Refugio County, is at the intersection of State
Highway 35 and FM 239. All that is there now is the remnants of a
mercantile store. Maudlowe was located on a spur of the railroad, and
basically served (I suppose) as a loading and unloading spot for the
O'Connor ranch. The ranch foreman of the south pasture of the O'Connor
ranch still has a place there. Loading cattle, grain, cotton, and
unloading supplies for the ranch. My Dad worked there when he was young,
unloading and loading the train cars. Maudlowe also used to be listed on
Texas roadmaps.
