Telegraph and Texas Register, November 26, 1845; Jones, Memoranda and Official Correspondence, 153, 167; Smith, The Annexation of Texas, 166, thinks that Houston and Jones were not in favor of annexation but preferred to safeguard Texas as an independent nation. It appears to the present writer that more has been read into the documents than they contain, but he is not prepared to offer his full conclusions at this time.
