Eighty-four teachers from across the state studied innovative ways of teaching history at the Texas State Historical Association’s
2003 History Awareness Workshop. The workshop was held on July 7-9 at the Omni Corpus Christi Bayfront Hotel.
The History Awareness Workshop is held each summer in a different Texas city and focuses on showing teachers practical methods
and relevant teaching devices. This year’s program included sessions on topics ranging from “Mexican-American and Ranching
History in South Texas” to the History Alive!© Program.
“This workshop enables educators to teach history outside the typical classroom setting, allowing history to come alive for
Texan students. It also provides a setting for teachers to discuss and share their teaching experiences,” said Holly O’Rear,
TSHA education coordinator.
The TSHA and the Center for Studies in Texas History at the University of Texas at Austin have conducted workshops yearly
since 1972. For more information on the History Awareness Workshop or any of the TSHA's other educational programs, contact
