Stephen Cure of Round Rock has been named the new education coordinator at the TSHA. Stephen brings training, experience,
and tremendous enthusiasm to the task. His comments:
While growing up outside Houston, family members cultivated my interest in the history of Texas through recollections describing
our family’s role in the revolution and other historic events. That interest was further heightened by caring teachers. After
high school a sense of duty and service to others compelled me to enlist in the army, where teamwork and planning took on
new meaning. Later, at the University of Texas at Austin, I was able to resume the study of history and politics while completing
a bachelor’s degree and teaching certificate.
As a middle school Texas history teacher and Junior Historian sponsor, I was able to see the powerful impact that the TSHA
can have in fostering an appreciation and love for history. Along similar lines, my involvement with students through the
National History Day program at the local, regional, and state levels has demonstrated to me the power of promoting strong
academic achievement through positive competition. Rarely does one have the opportunity to combine all his interests in one
endeavor, and I expect to fully apply what I have learned about students, educators, and organizations to make TSHA programs
a first-class model. Our programs have a long history of excellence and value to Texas students and educators. I feel fortunate
that it is now my charge to carry on and improve upon them so that we may continue to encourage a love of history and learning.
