Call for Papers: The Western History Association

The Western History Association will host its 45th annual conference at the Camelback Inn in Phoenix, Arizona, on October 12–15, 2005. The theme of the conference is “Western Traditions and Transitions: Cultural Diversity and Demographic Change.”

The program committee invites the submission of individual papers, roundtable discussions, panels, and sessions. Committee members encourage submissions focused on architecture, art, dance, food, gaming, immigration, Indian sovereignty, language, migration, music, schools, sports, tourism, the U.S.-Mexico border, urbanization, and water rights. They would welcome submissions centered in Arizona and New Mexico, with particular attention paid to Rudolfo Anaya, N. Scott Momaday, Jewell Parker Rhodes, and other significant creative writers; Dennis Chavez, Calvin Goode, Annie Wauneka, and other path breaking political leaders; the Double Eagle, Hapa, Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Café, and other memorable dining establishments; and Kykotsmovi, McNary, Truchas, and other distinctive communities.

If you are submitting a proposal for an entire session, please include an abstract that outlines the purpose of the session and designate one participant as the contact person. Each paper proposal, whether individual or in a session, should include a one-page abstract, along with a one-page c.v., and address, phone, and e-mail for each person. It will be assumed that all who are listed have agreed to participate. Program chairs for the conference in 2005 are Myla Vicenti Carpio (Vicenti@asu.edu) and Donald L. Fixico (dfixico@ku.edu). Send all proposals by August 31, 2004, to Professor Myla Vicenti Carpio, American Indian Studies Department, Arizona State University, Box 870803, Tempe, AZ 85287-0803.
