The Texas State Historical Association is proud to debut a new Web feature, Texas Lighthouses. This gallery features images and historical information about the lighthouses and lightships along Texas’s Gulf Coast, from
Sabine Pass to Point Isabel, as well as special features on the design and construction of lighthouses and on the men and
women who tended them.
The text accompanying the images is adapted from T. Lindsay Baker’s book The Lighthouses of Texas, published by Texas A&M University Press, and includes hyperlinks to relevant articles in the Handbook of Texas Online. The TSHA would like to acknowledge the assistance and generosity of the following individuals in assembling this gallery:
Charles Backus, director of Texas A&M University Press; T. Lindsay Baker; Donna Coates, photo editor; Bob Gray, who graciously
shared his postcard collection; Art Leatherwood, Handbook of Texas volunteer; and Charlene Zvolanek, Web designer, and Richard Brown, student worker, at the University of Texas at Austin.
Texas Lighthouses is the first of a projected series of galleries which will appear on the TSHA Online Web site. We hope you enjoy it!
