In 1986, a small group of individuals gathered to honor Cecilia Steinfeldt and her career studying Texas art and decorative arts by creating a $1,000 fellowship to be given annually by the Texas State Historical Association.  The fellowship supports new research on the decorative arts and fine arts, material culture, historic preservation, and architecture in Texas from the seventeenth century to the present.  Over the years, this small group has continued to support the annual grant with the idea of eventually raising the $25,000 needed to permanently endow this award.  After fifteen years, the group is seeking other individuals who have enjoyed and benefited from Cecilia’s work and those who to continue to follow in her career, to join in supporting this project .

Recently, Louis Marshall donated  “Bluebonnet, ” a painting by Robert Harrison, a former student of Cecilia’s, that was sold to support the endowment of the Steinfeldt award.  The results of this sale will go  towards expanding the endowment.  Yet more is needed to secure the endowment as a permanent celebration of the work and career of one who has done so much to create the study of  Texas material culture as a professional discipline.

Both senior and junior professionals have benefited from the award, including Noel Harris Freeze (“Importing the Trappings of Material Comfort to the Republic of Texas’), Kenneth Hafertepe (Material Culture of German Texas”), and Cynthia Brandimarte (“Muralist Edna Collins:  Teaching German POWs in the Art of Texas”).  A complete list of Steinfeldt  Award winners is attached to this letter.

We hope that you will find the idea of supporting this tribute to Cecilia as a permanent celebration of her career worthy of your support.  Gifts to the Texas State Historical Association in support of this award should be directed to the Association with the notation that the funds are to be  applied to the Steinfeldt Award.  These gifts are tax deductible.  It is possible to make a donation either by check (TSHA, 1155 Union Circle #311580, Denton, Texas  76203-5917) or through Paypal by clicking the donate button located on this page.
