The First Dragoons, stationed as a mobile reserve behind the front lines, watch the Mexican flanking attack along the mountains to their left. Note officers pointing in that direction. Chamberlain reports, "Our Squadron dismounted and took the bits out of our horses' mouths and let them graze on the scarce dry grammer [sic] grass whle we, seated at our ease on the ground viewed the drama being enacted on the mountain."
