Capt. John Paul Jones O'Brien's artillery and the Second Indiana Regiment bore the full brunt of the main attack by 7,000 Mexican lancers and infantry. The Indiana regiment broke, but O'Brien bravely stood his ground until most of his artillerymen were killed or wounded. He then managed to retreat, losing all three of his guns.
