The Second Indiana had received the brunt of the Mexican attack under Gen. Julian Juvera on the mountainside that overlooked Taylor's left flank, and it had broken and fled, leaving the U.S. left flank almost entirely dependent on O'Briens artillery, though the redoubtable Mississippi Rifles under Col. Jefferson Davis and the Third Indiana had just arrived on the field to save the day.
