at that time there was a great deal of unrest in the Georgia battalion, and a percentage of those enrolled in each of the three companies quitted their commands. On Jan. 21st, Major Ward wrote Governor Smith,

"I am compelled to communicate the mortifying intelligence that a few of our men have deserted us; but I hope the people of Texas will not distrust all Georgians because we have a few cowardly and unprincipled scoundrels among us."
Several of those who thus absented themselves from Major Ward's Command later enrolled in other companies and fought at San Jacinto, but in so far as the records disclose, Charles Barellon was not among them.
 

BARKLEY, JOHN H.Third Corporal
AgeShackelford's Company

John H. Barkley's name appears on the Land Office copies of Shackelford's muster roll; he was paid for the period Jan. 19th - March 27, 1836, and Wright N. Kirk, Administrator, collected his pay. [CMSR No. 9519, State Library.] All sources agree that he was a massacre victim on March 27th.
 

BARNHILL, JOHN N.Private
AgeShackelford's Company

John N. Barnhill's pay as private in Captain Shackelford's Company, Jan. 23 - March 27, 1836, was drawn by Dudley W. Babcock as attorney for his heirs, on customary War Department certificate of service as shown by the muster roll. [CMSR No. 8980, State Library.] All sources agree that he was a massacre victim on March 27th.
