John T. Garner was apparently the first member of Winn's Company to tire of the restrictions of military life. Opposite his name on the Land Office copy of Captain Winn's muster roll is the notation, "Left, Jany. 5th."

GATES, LUCIUS W.First Lieutenant
AgeWestover's Company

Lieutenant Gates was a nephew and foster son of Captain Ira J. Westover, and was appointed First Lieutenant of artillery, Texas Regular Army, Dec. 7, 1835. He served under Captain Westover from Jan. 3, 1836 until Fannin's surrender on March 20th, and was massacred on March 27th. Dr. Fields has preserved a story of his gallant conduct on
