James S. Gillett, adjutant general, certified, Aug. 30, 1859, that J. H. Grimes, whose name appears on LOMR as one of Shackelford's men killed at Goliad March 27, 1836, was shown by proof on file to have been James H. Grimes. LOMR for Shackelford's Company and the original and all subsequent versions of the T&TR roll of Fannin's men are in accord that he perished in the general massacre at Goliad, March 27, 1836.

Gunter was one of Shackelford's men carried on LOMR as having been slain at Goliad, March 27, 1836. This also appears from the original and all subsequent versions of the T&TR roll of Fannin's men, and from the files of the General Land Office, which show that bounty and donation certificates were issued by Claims Commission to the heirs of William Gunter, he having "fallen with Fannin."
