Dr. Shackelford collected H. W. Jones' pay as attorney for his heirs. He was paid for period Jan. 19 - March 27, 1836, on usual certificate from War Department that his name appeared on Captain Shackelford's roll. [CMSR No. 8851.] LOMR and original and all subsequent versions of T&TR roll show that he was a victim of the massacre at Goliad, March 27, 1836.

Nelson Jones was one of three members of Llewellyn's Company in action at Agua Dulce, March 2nd, 1836, who were captured by the enemy and sent as prisoners to Matamoros, the others being Stillman S. Curtis and Reuben R. Brown. He was one of Potter's "Prisoners of Matamoros."
After his release, which was on Jan. 29, 1837, he filed an application to the Texan Congress for his lands. [See Mahan's narratives, and Jones' petition to Congress; Memorial No. 6, File Box 49, State Department Archives, dated Nov. 10, 1837, State Library.]
