Lesson Plans - Grade 4

format to print
LESSON PLAN: DEFENDERS OF THE ALAMO
CONCEPT: Using the Internet to discover more about those who died at the Alamo.
GRADE: 4th, could be adapted for 7th
SUBJECT: history
TIME FRAME: 1 computer lab period, and 60 minutes to create a poster with information gained
CREDIT: Rachel Brunson, Carol Clark, Marsha Crow, Kaye Glaeser, Lane Holmstrom, Lori Warren (submitted by Marsha Crow)
OBJECTIVES:
Students will:
  1. select one defender of the Alamo to learn more about via the Internet.

  2. create a poster that communicates specific information about the defender they chose.

MATERIALS NEEDED:
  • Texas Defender Rubric

  • Student Atlases

  • one 12" x 18" piece of white paper per student

  • ruler, markers, colored pencils, or crayons

PROCEDURE:
  1. The teacher distributes a Texas Defender Rubric to each student, and then reviews the expectations with them.

  2. Students go to the web site listed under WEB LINKS, and choose one of the defenders whose last name begins with the same letter as theirs (or by any other method you choose as long as their choices as a class represent many of the defenders). They need to make sure that the specifics they need are listed for the person they choose (eg. some do not have a known birthplace).

  3. Once a defender has been decided on, the information required on the rubric is written on a separate piece of paper.

  4. Next, the information is transferred to the white paper, as indicated by the rubric. Each student turns-in their poster with the rubric.
