Amarilla Mountain is four miles northeast of Lajitas in southwestern Brewster County (at 29°19' N, 103°45' W). The summit rises to 3,013 feet above sea level. The name, which means "yellow" in Spanish, probably refers to the yellowish color of the mountain, which results from the mixture of iron oxides and clay minerals in the soils. Amarilla Mountain lies deep within the Chihuahuan Desert. The surrounding vegetation, characteristic of Chihuahuan Desert scrub, includes various shrub species and semisucculents such as lechuguilla, sotol, yucca, ocotillo, and the ubiquitous creosote bush.
