Arroyo Clareño rises a mile northwest of U.S. Highway 83 in southwest Zapata County (at 26°50' N, 99°09' W) and runs north and then southwest for a total of five miles to its mouth on the International Falcon Reservoir, nine miles southeast of Zapata (at 26°48' N, 99°12' W). The stream traverses low-rolling to flat terrain with local dunes. Much of the land surface is shallow to deep sandy and clay loams and sand that support scrub brush, grasses, and scattered oak mottes.
